I discovered Bounjour Sleep Proxy several years ago when I was trying to figure out how my 2012 Mac mini could just wake up on-demand when requesting content with my iPhone 5. But their routers for instance have a lot more bang for buck then people realise). A lot of people don’t realise all the invisible extras that Apple package into their products and just claim we’re paying the “Apple Brand Tax” (yes, we are. Great IPv6 support as well.Ġ - it’s useful enough that Apple wound up including it in the Apple TV.įor example, Bonjour Sleep Proxy is brilliant My TimeCapsule is still my primary WAP, and I can frequently hit just over 700Mbps (although of course this is dependant on being in the same room, which I frequently am). Yeah, you can totally count me in if Apple gets back into the home router game with modern gear. ![]() It allows your router to continue to advertise your Bonjour services even if your device is asleep (when it can’t advertise those services itself), and if the router picks up an incoming connection, it will wake the device and route the connection. They did, but it was features that worked so well they were pretty much invisible to end-users, and were otherwise difficult to explain.įor example, Bonjour Sleep Proxy is brilliant, and AFAIK there still isn’t a router out there that implements it 0. Obviously this only affects the "router" part of the deal, the switch operates fully in hardware and is a separate device internally, so LAN speed is unaffected by the router OS.Īpple saw less need to offer their own hardware as they didn’t really offer much that wasn’t better than the competition. Depending on your internet speed it might not make a difference, but if you're on fiber it does. You are often, as such, stuck between the choice of enjoying full-speed internet access but having to put up with the limitations of the stock fw, or using OpenWrt (which implements features absent altogether in any consumer router OS) but being limited to a few hundreds of Mbps. The problem is that on proprietary hardware, it's often not possible to use this feature on FOSS operating systems like OpenWrt, since it requires blobs not present in mainline Linux. The issue is that these devices are fundamentally embedded MIPS systems that do not have the processing power to handle even 1 Gbps streams in software (you need a proper x86 system, or a high-end router, preferably DPI-capable, for that), so instead of doing NAT in the OS, stock firmware uses NAT offloading to perform network-address translation in hardware. These days you most often wanna use OpenWRT. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
